Today sees the first of three new Torchwood radio plays, set in the same post series 2 timeframe as Lost Souls, Asylum, Deadline and Golden Age, and featuring Jack, Gwen, Ianto and Rhys.

The details are:
Title: The Devil and Miss Carew.
Airing: BBC radio 4 at 2.15pm Monday 11th July.
The program information can be found here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b012fbw8

BBC radio 4 live stream is here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/bbc_radio_fourfm/

Radio four is available worldwide on the BBC’s listen now for the 2.15pm broadcast, and via the listen again service for a week afterwards.

This is the reaction post for The Devil and Miss Carew, I’ll put up a review post shortly.

This is making me miss the old Torchwood hard. The Ianto and Jack banter is fantastic.

So far this one's pretty underwhelming. Barrowman's radio acting is still pretty awful; Eve, Kai, Gareth and the lady playing Miss Carew are much better.

Gwen's coming across extremely patronising towards Miss Carew here. I love her, but she's bugged me a few times so far.

It's a great exercise in series 1-2 nostalgia hearing GDL and Ianto again. Still pining the lack of this snarky, confident and clever Ianto in 95% of series three.

I really adored Miss Carew. =( I love spunky old ladies.

Yeah, John was built to be seen as well as heard. You need the big personality in full force for him to work. Same issue some folks have had with Jack in MD.

So far, my reaction is that we've got an awful lot of James Bond villains running around. "Here's my evil plan so you can fix it."

I'm guessing this is because they're trying to bite off a lot in a one hour format, so, right - how about going for something smaller?

Ditto on the Ianto commentary.

*blinks*

Did anyone else have an awful flashback moment as Jack and Ianto were standing in the purpose-built room that was waiting to receive a threatening, unseen alien from outer space wanting to come to Earth and destroy all their lives ???

I was more or less trying to block out anything series three and pretending I had no idea what happened in whatever-time-frame-is-meant-to-be after the plays. =P This is where retcon would be very useful; I kept hearing more clunky foreshadowing of ~future events~ which always drives me nuts.

It was made up for quite a bit by the lolworthiness of Gwen getting captured and hog-tied by an 81-year-old lady *grins*

Reminded me how much I miss the 'old' TW - Ianto of course, but also Tosh and Owen. Story was silly, but the Welsh vowels were divine.

Juliet Mills was great as Miss Carew, she is such a great actress.

Why did they set it this year? That is odd.

I enjoyed the banter between Jack and Ianto, and Gwen and Rhys, I liked how they made it two couples, and I liked the way Jack and Ianto were having an adventure, they were very cute.

I deplore the lack of kissy-kissy sounds between Ianto and Jack.

Ianto is always prepared -- torches, Swiss Army knife. Rustbucket, are you listening?

(Psst, does anyone have a link to a version of the radio play that's downloadable outside of the UK? Chocolate and cakes forever if you do!)

I think fearisaluxury means a link to be able to download the play. We can all listen to it outside the UK, but the podcast download of it is region locked to the UK only.~Sophia
